Retrofit. Reimagined.

Imagine the millions of people and actions it takes to improve the country's housing stock on a large scale.

Each unnecessary click, booking missed, cancelled project or funding shortfall is another hurdle on the road to comfortable, net-zero homes.

Software alone won't repair and decarbonise our homes and buildings by 2050.

But without it, we won't get there.

We build the software infrastructure that helps the whole industry to push, as one, in the same direction.

Frequently asked questions

Here is what people often ask us about Shared Works. If we aren't answering your question here, please get in touch on the contact form.

GENERAL QUESTIONS
Is Shared Works suitable for blocks of flats?

Yes. Shared Works is designed to support both individual homes and blocks of flats. It can manage whole-building upgrades, including where multiple residents, owners, or landlords are involved.

The platform helps coordinate surveys, permissions, and works across all the properties in a block, so that everyone stays informed and the process stays on track.

Can Shared Works tell me what energy upgrades my home needs?

Yes. Shared Works can provide upgrade recommendations for your home, based on the data available.

If your home has already been assessed by a qualified professional under PAS 2035 (the national standard for retrofit projects), Shared Works will show you a tailored plan based on that assessment. including recommended measures, estimated savings, and next steps.

Even without a full assessment, Shared Works can generate a basic improvement plan using your property’s EPC data. This can be a helpful starting point. However, the more data we have — and the higher its quality, the more accurate and useful the recommendations will be.

What’s a “building passport” or “property logbook”?

A building passport is a digital record of your home that brings together key information in one place, such as its age, construction type, energy performance, previous upgrades, and future recommendations.

In Shared Works, the building passport helps assessors, contractors, and residents understand what has been done to the property, what still needs doing, and how to plan improvements over time. It’s especially useful for coordinating retrofit works and tracking progress across different funding schemes.

Think of it as your home’s long-term improvement plan, stored securely and updated as new works are completed.

How does Shared Works use my data and is it accessible to anyone using the tool?

Shared Works only collects the data needed to deliver retrofit programmes safely and effectively, such as your contact details, property information, occupancy information, condition of the building, and any documents you’ve provided. This data is used to check eligibility, produce a roadmap, coordinate works, and keep you informed.

Your data is not visible to everyone using the tool. Access is strictly limited to authorised users who are directly involved in delivering your project, such as your local council, trusted contractors, or assessors. We follow all GDPR rules and keep your data secure at every stage (are platform is tested for security every year).

We never share your information with anyone outside the project without your permission and you have full control over you data inside the platform.

Features & Functionality
What is Shared Works?

Shared Works is a digital platform that helps coordinate energy efficiency upgrades and other home improvement projects. It brings together councils, contractors, and residents so that everyone stays informed and the work gets done smoothly.

Who is Shared Works for?

Shared Works is used by local authorities, housing associations, installers, assessors, and residents. Whether you’re managing a retrofit programme or getting improvements done on your home, Shared Works helps you stay on track.

What kind of organisation is Novoville?

Novoville is a UK-based technology company founded in 2016. We build digital tools that help public services work better, especially in housing, repairs, and climate-related upgrades.

Our platforms are used by local authorities, housing providers, and residents to coordinate everything from shared repairs in blocks of flats (via Shared Repairs) to large-scale retrofit programmes (via Shared Works).

We work closely with public sector partners and have taken part in innovation programmes like the DIATOMIC Accelerator run by Connected Places Catapult. Birmingham City Council was our first Shared Works client, and we’re actively involved in EU-funded projects such as CLIMINVEST, which focuses on making retrofit projects more financially sustainable.

Since then, Shared Works has expanded to cover many UK local authorities.

What is Shared Works’ relationship with my local authority?

Shared Works is used (and most of the time, procured) by your local authority to help manage retrofit and energy upgrade programmes. We work in partnership with councils to collect applications, coordinate with contractors, and keep residents informed.

Your local authority decides who is eligible and oversees the delivery of the scheme. Shared Works provides the digital tools that help make the process smoother and more transparent for everyone involved.

Who are Novoville and what do they have to do with Shared Works?

Novoville is the company behind Shared Works. We build digital tools that help councils and communities run essential services more effectively. Shared Works is one of our platforms, created specifically to support retrofit and home upgrade programmes. We work closely with local authorities, housing providers, and contractors to keep everything organised, transparent, and easy to manage.

I’m a resident. Why have I been invited to use Shared Works?

You’ve likely applied for help with energy upgrades, such as through ECO, GBIS, or the Warm Homes programmes. Shared Works is where you can upload documents, track progress, and get updates about your application or the works being done.

I’m a contractor or assessor. How do I use Shared Works?

You can register as a “company” on Shared Works, and you will then be associated with the correct local authority, and programme. Once logged in, you can see assigned leads, update progress, upload surveys, and communicate with other parties involved in the project. You can connect your CRM or job management tool to simplify reporting and engagement.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Shared Works runs in your web browser. There’s nothing to install, just log in from any device.

How much does it cost?

There is no cost for residents to use Shared Works. If you’re applying for a government-funded scheme like ECO4, GBIS or Warm Homes, the platform is provided as part of the service.

For councils, housing providers, or contractors, Shared Works is offered under a subscription model. If you’re interested in using it for your organisation, get in touch with us and we’ll be happy to provide more information.

What is the difference between Shared Works and Shared Repairs?

Shared Repairs and Shared Works are two separate services from Novoville.

  • Shared Repairs is designed for owners of flats in Scotland who need to organise repairs to shared parts of their building, like the roof or stairwell. It helps neighbours coordinate, collect quotes, and get the job done together. Right now, this is available on an app, but will soon become available on the web, in the same platform as Shared Works. Shared Repairs has its own website here.

  • Shared Works is built for councils, contractors, and residents involved in larger energy upgrade programmes. It helps manage applications, surveys, installations, and funding across many homes.

Each platform is tailored to a different type of project, but both aim to make property improvements easier and better managed.

What is Novoville’s relationship with Scene?

Novoville and Scene are two separate organisations working together to improve how retrofit projects are delivered.

Scene brings expertise in building energy modelling and carbon savings. Novoville provides the digital platform – Shared Works – to manage the process from start to finish. Together, we combine technical insight with practical tools to help councils, contractors, and residents achieve better outcomes.

What are retrofit programmes like ECO, GBIS, and Warm Homes?

Retrofit programmes are government-funded (someone, utility-funded) schemes that help households improve the energy efficiency of their homes, things like insulation, heating upgrades, or ventilation improvements.

Here are a few examples:

  • ECO (Energy Company Obligation): A UK-wide scheme where energy suppliers fund energy-saving upgrades in homes, especially for people on lower incomes or in hard-to-heat properties.

  • GBIS (Great British Insulation Scheme): A newer scheme focused on delivering insulation measures to a wider group of households, including some not eligible under ECO.

  • Warm Homes Programme: Local or national programmes (often run by councils or devolved governments) that provide funding and support to improve home energy efficiency and reduce fuel poverty.

These schemes are designed to lower energy bills, make homes more comfortable, and reduce carbon emissions. Shared Works helps councils and contractors deliver them more effectively, and helps residents track their application and upgrades from start to finish.

Why don’t I just get an retrofit assessor to tell me what to do, why do I need Shared Works?

A retrofit assessor plays a vital role: they assess your home and recommend improvements. But Shared Works goes a step further. It gives you a secure place to store the data they produce, see those recommendations and make them more detailed, track your progress, and coordinate with everyone involved, including the council, contractors, and funders.

Shared Works helps make sure nothing gets lost in emails or paperwork. It keeps all your documents, approvals, and updates in one place, so you always know what’s happening and what comes next.

In short, the assessor tells you what to do, Shared Works helps make sure it gets done. Lots of assessors use the home modelling inside Shared Works to make recommendations to you in the first place.
